Canasa is used to treat ulcerative rectal colitis (ulcerative proctitis) by preventing swelling in the rectum and intestine as well as sores in the intestine.

The prescription drug Canasa is only available as a rectal suppository in 1000mg doses. It is usually administered as one suppository daily before bed time for three to six weeks, as determined by your doctor based on your symptoms.

You may not be able to use this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have or have a history of heart problems, kidney or liver problems, pancreatic problems, bleeding in the brain including stroke or aneurysm, rheumatic disease, or Kawasaki syndrome. This drug may interact with other medications, including ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, NSAIDs, anti-diabetic medications, azathioprine or mercaptopurine, or certain natural extracts. Do not take this medication if you currently have the flu or chicken pox, you've received a vaccine in the last six weeks, you're allergic to NSAIDs or salicylates, or you're taking probenecid or sulfinpyrazone.
