Augmentin is prescribed to treat a number of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, bronchitis, ear infections, pneumonia, and sinusitis.
Augmentin comes in the form of regular or chewable pills or an oral suspension. Dosages vary based on infection and frequency of administration. The usual adult dose is one 500mg Augmentin pill every 12 hours, or one 250mg Augmentin pill every 8 hours. The more severe infections, as well as infections of the respiratory tract, require a higher dosage, typically one 875mg Augmentin pill every 12 hours, or one 500mg Augmentin pill every 8 hours. Children under 80 pounds, should not take even the 250mg tablet of Augmentin.
Serious anaphylactic reactions can occur while using Augmentin, especially for those with a history of penicillin hypersensitivity or hypersensitivity to multiple allergens. Augmentin may cause diarrhea, but if the diarrhea becomes watery or bloody, contact your physician immediately. Patients allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanate potassium, or any other amoxicillin drug, or who have had liver problems caused by this medication should not use Augmentin. Talk with your doctor before breast-feeding on Augmentin, or if you have a history of kidney or liver problems, may become pregnant, or have mononucleosis. While taking the Augmentin drug, do not drive or operate heavy machinery, as it may make you dizzy.
