Alprazolam is approved for use to treat generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by unrealistic or disproportionate anxiety and worry surrounding relationships or life events that lasts six months or longer. Symptoms of panic disorder include recurrent panic attacks that occur unexpectedly and often without explanation.

Alprazolam is dispensed as a tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, extended release tablet or as a solution, all of which are taken orally. The extended release tablet is taken once a day, typically in the morning. The other formulations are taken once or twice daily, depending on the doctor’s instructions.

Take alprazolam pills or extended release tablets with water; do not crush or break them.

The disintegrating tablet needs to be removed from its container using dry hands and placed immediately on the tongue. Do not swallow it, but allow it to dissolve (it will do so quickly).

When taking the oral solution, extract the prescribed amount using the dropper provided, and mix it with juice, water, or semi-solid foods such as applesauce, pudding, etc. Stir it in and then consume the entire amount; do not save any for later use.

Pregnancy: Because alprazolam pills and syrup may harm a fetus, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. If you become pregnant while taking the alprazolam medication, contact your physician immediately. Also, inform your doctor if you are nursing a child as the medication can be transferred through breast milk.

Interactions: Let your doctor know if you are allergic to alprazolam, other benzodiazepines, or any medications; tell your doctor if you are taking SSRIs, itraconazole, ketoconazole, digoxin, antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamines, erythromycin, seizure medications, pain medications, oral contraceptives, tranquilizers or sleeping pills, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products (especially St. John’s wort).

Medical Conditions: Let your doctor know if you have, or have had, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or lung disease. Tell your healthcare professional if you have glaucoma, seizures, depression or have thoughts of suicide, suffer from alcoholism, drug dependency or addiction, or you if you smoke.
