Adacel is classified as a vaccine, and it works by exposing the patient to a small dose of the bacteria or protein of the bacteria that cause these infections, which causes the body to develop an immunity to the disease.
Adacel is usually given in only one, 0.5 mL IM dose in patients ages 18 to 64 in order to immunize the patient against tetanus, pertussis, and diphtheria.
