This medication is often prescribed to prevent osteoporosis, especially for women who have already experienced menopause. It can also be prescribed to prevent osteoporosis in adult men and women who are prescribed glucocorticoids. It's also used in the treatment of Paget's Disease.

Actonel is only available in tablets, and it's often distributed in dosing packs. Depending on your treatment plan, you may be prescribed one 5 mg tablet taken one time daily, one 35mg tablet taken one time weekly, one 75mg tablet daily for two consecutive days each month, or one 150mg tablet one time monthly. This medication should always be taken by mouth at least 30 minutes before a meal along with a full glass of water.

Do not use this medication if you cannot sit or stand for at least 30 minutes, or if you have hypocalcemia or esophageal muscle movement problems. You may not be able to take this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have or have a history of ulcers in the stomach or esophagus, kidney disease, or D-vitamin deficiency.
