Abilify is prescribed to treat the symptoms of certain psychological disorders, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, as well as Tourette’s syndrome and autistic disorders in children six and older. It may also be used in conjunction with other medications to treat major depressive disorder.
The Abilify drug is administered as a tablet in dosage strengths of 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30mg and is taken orally, once a day, without regard to food. It may take two weeks or longer before its full benefits are realized. Continue taking this medication even if you feel well.
Abilify may cause an uncontrollable urge to gamble, shop, binge eat, engage in sexual activity, or engage in other compulsive behaviors. Older adults with dementia who take Abilify have an increased risk of death. This medication may induce suicidal thoughts. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following: mania, aggressive behavior, panic attacks, acting impulsively, new or worsening depression; thoughts or plans of self-harm or suicide, extreme worry or agitation, sleep difficulties, irritability, or severe restlessness. Do not drink alcohol while taking Abilify. This medication may cause orthostatic hypotension. Abilify may make it difficult for your body to cool down after exertion. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, nursing a child or if you become pregnant while taking this medication.
